The steel bridge which makes crossing of the Birim river by vehicles and humans easy is one of the first ever road and rail bridges built in West Africa in the early 1950s and has seen no major rehabilitation since its construction.
A visit to the site reveals that the metallic pillars of the bridge are rusting with disjointed metal bars and pot holes also developing on the macadam.
Another worrying situation is the fact that there are no street lights across the bridge.
Meanwhile, it was also observed that a number of heavy articulated trucks transporting logs in and around Akyem Oda to the Western Region port of Takoradi ply the bridge.
Another worrying situation is the fact that the premium Senior High School in the municipality, Oda Senior High School is situated just about three kilometers away from the bridge.
The group is therefore urging the authorities to take urgent steps to repair and maintain the bridge.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, Kwabena Nkansah Asare who received the petition on behalf of the Assembly in the presence of the Municipal Coordinating Director assured the group that he will work on their petition with dispatch.
