The suspect, Ephraim Okoro, alias Junior, a student at the Golf City College, Dansoman, was arrested by a police night patrol team, while his accomplice, identified as Chimeze, alias Cheeboy, managed to escape arrest.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Odorkor District Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Osei Agboda, said Okoro and his accomplice were apprehended on October 1, 2015 by a police patrol team.
He also said investigations showed that the two had earlier tried to convince one of their friends to join them in the operation since life in Ghana was becoming unbearable for them.
Their friend, who is also a Nigerian, is currently assisting the police in their investigations.
Mr Agboda said at about 11:30pm on October 1, 2015, Okoro and his accomplice, armed with a machete and pliers, covered their faces with masks and attacked the victim, who is also a Nigerian student in Ghana, in his apartment at Atico.
The victim, who was asleep when the two broke into his room, was subjected to severe beatings and asked to surrender all his money and mobile phone.
According to Mr Agboda, the victim managed to call the police control room for assistance while the robbers were ransacking his room.
A police patrol team in the area was immediately informed and they rushed to the scene to find the suspects in the act.
One of the suspects, who was later identified as Chimeze, “upon seeing the police, abandoned his mobile phone and mask and managed to escape,” Mr Agboda said.
However, the police apprehended Okoro and handed him over to the Odorkor Police.
